2025 ATLANTIC FOREST CONFERENCE MAPS
ABOUT
Commissioned by the Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Paraná and presented at the Atlantic Forest Conference, a preparatory event for COP30 2025, this project aims to transform art into a strategic tool for environmental awareness. Utilizing a vintage cartographic aesthetic, the maps of Brazil’s biomes and Paraná’s conservation units serve as a visual inventory of the biodiversity that demands protection.
To achieve this impact, a rigorous technical study was conducted, resulting in digital illustrations of more than 30 species of fauna and flora, along with the detailed mapping of indigenous reserves, quilombola territories, and environmental protection areas. The vintage style is more than an aesthetic choice; it creates a sense of urgency, positioning these natural riches not as relics of the past, but as a living heritage that must be preserved for the future.
CULTURAL CONTEXT
The project emerged in response to the climate urgency discussed at the Conference that brought together governors and authorities to debate the green economy and the restoration of a biome that accounts for 70% of the Brazilian GDP. The central challenge was to translate complex technical data from SEDEST into a powerful visual narrative that would generate emotional connection and immediate awareness.
Given the need to mobilize decision-makers, the design materialized not only as an exhibition but as a persistent pedagogical tool. The maps were delivered to participants in A2 poster format and printed on Vergé paper. This choice of media seeks to ensure the work transcends the event and occupies physical spaces as a constant reminder of the urgency of preserving biodiversity. The artistic resource was thus used to transform governmental information into a tangible and memorable visual heritage.
SOLUTION
The execution of the project was based on a rigorous research phase using data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the book Conservation Units by SEDEST. This technical study was essential to ensure the geographical and biological accuracy required to faithfully represent Brazil’s biomes and environmental protection areas. The strategy consisted of merging scientific rigor with a visual aesthetic that facilitated the public's understanding of biodiversity.
The creative process for the illustrations was conducted entirely digitally using the iPad. Each of the more than 30 species of fauna and flora was drawn one by one, following the engraved style to emulate the texture of traditional antique prints. To achieve this level of detail, real references were used to analyze anatomical and botanical characteristics, ensuring the final result was an authentic artistic synthesis. This method allowed for the integration of a significant volume of technical information into a balanced and aesthetically impactful visual composition.
